When the exhaust needs renewing

In Finland exhaust system life is often shorter than vehicle life. Road salt corrodes the outside of the pipe and moisture condenses inside over short trips, causing rust to attack from both sides. A typical Finnish exhaust lasts 6–10 years — longer with plenty of motorway use, noticeably shorter with heavy short-trip city driving. The first symptom is often a deep, loud exhaust note that rises with acceleration. Small holes or leaks in silencer seams also increase exhaust drone. A worse problem is the pipe detaching from its rubber mount and scraping the ground — a metallic grating noise from underneath over humps and kerbs. At MOT the exhaust is measured with a decibel meter and the passing limit is 94 dB for passenger cars. A broken silencer or an internal hole easily exceeds this. Another common fail reason is an exhaust leak upstream of the cabin — that creates a gas poisoning risk for the driver.

Our Services

Why do exhausts corrode faster in Finland?

Exhaust corrosion typically starts from the inside out. On short trips condensate doesn't evaporate as the pipe heats up; it collects at the bottom of the silencer and rusts it from the inside. Motorway driving heats the pipe to 600 °C and the moisture burns off, but on city trips the pipe never reaches that temperature. The worst case is therefore short daily commuting where the pipe never fully warms. The other cause is road salt: winter salt attacks the protective paint on the outside and rust develops from outside in. Stainless steel is increasingly standard on modern cars, but for example the first silencer after the manifold still uses heat-resistant carbon steel, which corrodes more readily.

Service overview

Exhaust Work in Vantaa starts with correct diagnosis and a clear work scope. Exhaust Work relates to engine cooling, sealing, combustion or mechanical durability. Correct diagnosis separates a worn part, leak and control fault.

What it does

Exhaust Work relates to engine cooling, sealing, combustion or mechanical durability. Correct diagnosis separates a worn part, leak and control fault.

Why it's critical

Correct scoping is critical because the same symptom can come from a worn part, electronic control, a leak or an earlier incomplete repair.

Why you shouldn't ignore it

Driving too long with the fault can damage related parts and turn a manageable service into a larger repair.

Commonly affected systems

  • The exact part and equipment code is confirmed before ordering parts.
  • Service history, driving pattern and symptom duration affect the repair route.
  • The final scope is based on inspection.

Symptoms

Warning light or message

The car's own warning indicates that the system needs inspection before parts are replaced.

Changed driving feel

Vibration, hesitation, weak response or unusual behaviour helps locate the fault.

Unusual noise

Knocking, scraping, whining or squealing can indicate wear, play or incorrect load.

Leak, smell or visible damage

A fluid leak, burnt smell or torn protective boot should be checked promptly.

Symptom returns after reset

Clearing a fault code alone does not repair the mechanical or electrical root cause.

When is service needed?

Typical service interval

Need is assessed from symptoms, mileage and service history.

Factors that affect wear

Road salt, cold starts, short trips, load and previous repairs can accelerate wear.

Impact of maintenance and oil changes

Timely inspection reduces the risk of secondary damage.

Vehicle-specific checks

Engine and equipment details are checked for the specific car.

Risks of delaying

Fault spreads

A failed part can stress related components.

Repair cost rises

Continued driving can increase parts and labour.

The car may become unusable

Some faults progress quickly into limp mode or no-start.

Inspection may fail

A warning light, leak or safety-related fault can prevent approval.

Safety is reduced

Control of steering, braking, tyres or engine operation can change.

    Diagnosis and inspection

We check fault codes, live data and mechanical condition according to the job.

  3. 3

    Repair plan

You receive an estimate for parts, labour time and price before work starts.

  4. 4

    Repair work

The faulty part is replaced or serviced according to manufacturer guidance.
